3 Beliefs That Are Holding You Back from Mentoring (and How to Break Free)

Mentoring can feel big and intimidating. You might even think, “I’ll probably just mess it up.” But the truth is, you are far more equipped to mentor than you realize.

In this post, we’re going to walk through three beliefs that commonly hold Christian women back from mentoring – and how to overcome them with truth, perspective, and purpose.

Let’s dive in.

Belief #1: "I Have Nothing To Give"

If you’ve ever thought…

  • “What would I even tell her?”

  • “My life is boring.”

  • “I’m too much of a mess to help someone else.”

…then this belief has a hold on you.

But here’s the truth:

You do have something to give. And chances are, it’s more than you think.

Try this 2-part reflection exercise:

  1. Make a list of what other Christian women have poured into you.
Think back to Bible studies, small groups, conferences, or one-on-one conversations. What words impacted you? What did God use in those moments? Jot them down.

  2. Make a list of what God has done in your life.

    • How has He healed or redeemed parts of your story?

    • What has He taught or convicted you of?

    • How has your heart changed since walking with Him?

Keep adding to these lists over time.

You’ll begin to see that:
The women who impacted you may not have felt “qualified” either.

God has shaped your life in ways worth sharing - and your stories can point your mentee straight to Him.

Mentoring isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about being faithful to pass on what God has given you.

Belief #2: "I'll Mess Up My Mentee"

This fear often sounds like:

  • “What if I say the wrong thing?”

  • “What if I accidentally lead her away from God?”

  • “My life is too messy to be a good example.”

It’s understandable – but here’s what you need to know:

God’s plans are bigger than your mistakes.

Yes, you’ll likely make mistakes as a mentor. We all do. You may even give advice through your own bias instead of a biblical lens. But as long as you’re walking closely with God, staying teachable, and correcting when needed, He will continue to work through you – and in your mentee.

What a Mentor Is Not

As long as you’re walking closely with God, staying teachable, and correcting when needed, He will continue to work through you - and in your mentee.

Belief #3: "I Won't Do a Good Job"

This final belief shows up as self-doubt:

  • “I don’t know how to mentor.”

  • “I’ve never had a mentor myself.”

  • “What if I get it wrong?”

This belief is a loud, mean voice – and it’s one that many Christian women wrestle with. But it doesn’t get to decide your next step.

Be honest with your mentee. If you’ve never mentored before, tell her! Let her know you’re committed to walking it out and learning as you go. That’s what my mentor and I did.

We didn’t know what we were doing at first either. And we couldn’t find many helpful resources to guide us… which is exactly why I created Risen Mentor – to equip women like you with the biblical tools, confidence, and support to mentor well.

You don't have to be perfect. You just have to be willing.

Final Encouragement

These three beliefs –

  1. I have nothing to give

  2. I’ll mess up my mentee

  3. I won’t do a good job
-are keeping too many Christian women from walking out their calling to mentor.

But you don’t have to stay stuck in those lies.

Take one step forward today.
Let truth reshape your perspective.
And trust that God will lead you as you lead someone else.
